Questions to Ask Your Plumbing Contractor

Plumbing-ContractorLooking for a great plumbing contractor can get a little difficult at times. There are tons of different contractors out there advertising their services and trying to get new clients. However, you’ve probably heard of plumbing scams before. You may have even heard horror stories about people hiring plumbers and getting repairs that weren’t great. The fact of the matter is you don’t want to waste your money hiring someone that won’t do anything for you or your plumbing. Hiring a great plumbing contractor like First Choice Plumbing Heating & Air and other similar companies is hard these days, and you’ll want to be sure you do it. So, what are you supposed to do? It may be hard to find a great plumbing contractor, but it’s most certainly not impossible. There are some questions you should be asking every potential contractor you speak with, and this article will list some of those most important questions. Pay attention to the answers of these questions and you’ll be able to determine if the plumbing contractor you’re interviewing is going to be a good one.

  • Does the plumbing contractor have a plumbing license and business license? This should be the first question you ask a plumbing contractor. To run a business, the law requires that some sort of business license is had by the owner of the business. However, plumbing license requirements vary from state to state. Check with your local licensing authorities to see what’s required of plumbers in your area. Then, you’ll want to check if the plumbing contractor actually has what’s required by law. Check their license number with the local licensing authorities to see if it’s valid and up to date.
  • Does the plumbing contractor carry liability insurance? Unlike licenses, liability insurance is not required by law for a plumbing contractor to have. However, it should be a personal requirement that you have for the plumbing contractor that you hire. Liability insurance will cover you in the case of an accident. If the plumbing contractor you hire doesn’t have insurance and an accident happens during the repair, it’s likely that you’ll need to cover the cost of the damage and injury that occurred during the accident. It’s simple. Don’t hire a plumber that doesn’t carry insurance. You’ll want to contact the insurance provider to make sure the plan the plumber carries is valid.
  • How much experience does the plumbing contractor have with plumbing? Experience really does matter when it comes to plumbing repairs. There are many inexperienced plumbers out there that have the training to do the repairs, but they just don’t have the expertise. Hiring an experienced plumbing contractor can be one of the best things to do for your plumbing. However, if you’re looking to save a little money, hiring a less experienced plumber can be a good thing. If you do this, though, you’ll want to hold the inexperienced plumbing contractor to the same standards as you would with more experienced plumbers.
  • Will the plumbing contractor provide you with a full-price estimate for the repair? Many plumbing contractors will quote you an open-ended price for the cost of the repair, then charge you by the hour. If the plumber takes longer with the repair than they originally thought, you could end up with a pretty hefty bill. A good plumbing company such as First Choice Plumbing Heating & Air and other companies will give you an up-front, full-price estimate so you know exactly what you’ll be paying. You’ll also want to get that estimate in writing.
